BRIEF HISTORY
Bacalar, one of Quintana Roo’s hidden treasures, is the gem of the Mexican Caribbean whose main attraction is its Lagoon of Seven Colors (Laguna de los Siete Colores). The Bacalar lagoon, fed by the Hondo River, inspires peace and relaxation, where one can escape the hustle and bustle of cities like Chetumal, 20 minutes away, or Cancun, 2 ½ hours away.
Even though it’s known for its exceptional colors and natural beauty few have developed its tourism, until now where the government is converting it into one of the principle attractions of the south of Quintana Roo.
Most recently, the Bacalar Lake area has been declared a national program called Magic Towns (Pueblos Magicos) headed by Sedetur, the government agency appointed to tourism developments throughout Mexico. Already with this declaration Bacalar has qualified for Federal funding for further infrustructure and promotional developments for such projects as golf course communitees, resorts, and marinas. In addtion, funding will go toward the preservation of the various Mayan ruin sites peppered throughout the region. The aim for the Bacalar area is to become a multifaceted destination where a union of adventure, history and closeness with nature are integrated as the Magic Towns of Mexico.
ACTIVITIES
Bacalar celebrates two important activities each August, the Fair of San Joaquín, a religious fair that attracts many throughout the community, and the professional speed-boat races, that draws international professionals and their high-preformance boats and crew.
